Mental clutter can be described as unwanted thoughts that occupy your mind. When clutter is built up it causes you to loose your focus and you struggle to get almost anything done. It is productivity’s worst enemy and it may also harm your social and leisure time. When there is something in your head that you cannot stop worrying about, being productive or enjoying your spare time is difficult. You feel so obsessed with your thoughts that you simply cannot put your focus elsewhere. Worry, guilt and negative self-talk are some of the common damaging mental clutters that one can suffer from. These negative thought patterns can be awfully draining and in worst-case lead to anxiety, stress and depression. When we are too caught up in our own thoughts we struggle to see that there actually is a way out of it. However, there are some simple steps one can follow in order to clean up the mess. You will feel much better once you make an effort to regularly clear your mind of obsessive thoughts that overwhelm you. Below are some tips to get rid of mental clutter that stands in your way for greatness!
- 1. Make lists
In order to stay productive and keep track of the things you have to do it is great to create lists. A lot of the time we are worrying about tasks that have to be done and if we write these down on lists we are already taking away a lot of the stress around them. You do not have to worry about all the things you have to do, simply look on the list and do the tasks in order of their importance. Making lists is a great way of getting rid of worry.

If your life is unorganized you are likely to have a lot of concern around it. Clean up your environment in order to get a more calm state of mind. Clean your house and organize your clothes, paperwork and material stuff. You will feel way less stressed when you have an organized atmosphere around you. You do not have to subconsciously worry about where your things are and what needs to be done around in your house.
- 3. Physically de-clutter
A great way to calm your mind is to get active. Exercising will help you release a stressful thought pattern when you have too much going on in your head. Go for a walk, run or practice your favorite activity. It is well researched that exercise has numerous benefits for your mind, body and soul.

Practicing different mindfulness techniques can do wonders for a cluttered brain. There are several techniques you can try out to see which one fits for you, for example breathing exercises, guided meditation and yoga. Breathing exercises help you reconnect and touch base with your inner peace. Meditation and mindfulness techniques help you reach an inner calm and gain focus, while yoga can be viewed as more of a physically active meditation process.

A cool way to free your mind is to actively dump the clutter in your brain. Find a time where you can spend a few minutes and simply write down everything that comes to your mind. Write down whatever shows up in your brain during this certain time. Write until you cannot think anymore. After you have completed this exercise you will have released most of your worries and it can help you let go of them. When you have set a time for this during your day, you gain focus on the present by allowing yourself to worry only at that certain time.

Journaling is an awesome way of clearing your head. Getting your thoughts out of your head and down on paper is a wonderful way to create calmness. You will be surprised how writing your worries and frustrations down can help you clarify real issues. In addition you can write down all the things you are grateful for to add a more positive touch. The key is simply to write down whatever you are feeling and to not judge your feelings and thoughts. If you do this every night you also set yourself up for a good night sleep and wake up more refreshed with less worries.

As you start a habit of writing you will start to reflect more over your life and thoughts. Give yourself time during the day to simply reflect. Think about how you have been spending your time and what has brought you to a potential state of stress and overwhelm. Is there anything you can do differently to help you move forward? Reflecting on the past can help you gain insight into how you can move forward in a healthier and more strategic way.
