How to Find Your Next Mentor

You took the plunge, jumped in with both feet and got yourself a mentor. Then you probably worked your ass off, learned a huge amount of new skills and applied them. Then you got some results – good for you.

But what now? What is next?

Well, I am glad you asked!

What is the next step for you? Where do you want to go next? What is the new destination?

It can be anything from a new business goal, to new relationship goals. But only you know this. And if you don’t, it is the first question to ask yourself.

You must know what you are trying to do.

Next step is to find someone who is already successfully doing what it is that you want to do.

We are blessed to live in the world of information. We have the internet to connect us to new information, people, and cat videos. After you navigate past the cute cats, you can find the solutions to your problem on YouTube. Mentors will show their worth with their content.

Formal Mentorship

Shop around and find the right person you want to work with – then reach out. You can connect with anyone in a wide variety of ways – Email, Twitter, Facebook, Phone, Fax and carrier pigeon will work just fine. Formal mentorship is the fastest way to get to where you want to go. You will work 1 on 1 with them and get a personalised guide toward your goals.

Simply asking the mentor is the only way to do it. Ask them if they would be interested in mentoring you. They are human, just like you, so don’t be nervous about asking. If you don’t ask it will always be a no, and if you do ask, you will have a chance at it being a yes.

But what if you don’t have the investment amount? As some mentors are unfortunately outside of our budget. Well for starters, you could ask them for a referral to someone they think you could be a fit for, or learn the skills you need in another way.

Informal Mentorship

Informal mentorship is a lower investment to the hard-core formal mentoring. You might have read books, taken courses, listened to podcasts and read blogs from certain mentors. These alternate forms of mentorship can range from free, to high priced – so it is in anyone’s budget. You absorb the content, apply it, and then get a result. Simple stuff, isn’t it?

Mentorship is the secret to getting ahead. It is the “Hack”. It is the silver bullet. It is the FastTrack to success. It is whatever the latest buzzword that is going around, that basically gets you to where you want to be, but faster.

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” – Isaac Newton.

Stand on the shoulders of the giants. Learn from the best, get their results, then surpass them – it isn’t the only way, but it is the best way.
